Glossary of Spa Terms

Antioxidant

Substances that prevent or impede cell destruction by free radicals. To some extent, cancer prevention.

 

Aromatherapy

Coined by the French cosmetic chemist, Rene-Maurice Gattefossé in the 1920's, Gattefossé began by studying the medicinal effects of lavender on burns and dedicated his life to researching the healing properties of nature's essential oils. Aromatherapy is simply the use of Essential Oils in a therapeutic sense.

 

Ayurvedic

Medicinal system from India. Thousands of years old (developed around the same time as traditional Chinese medicine such as acupuncture). Uses massage, oils, herbs, and nutrition as its basis.

 

Deep Tissue Massage

Massage modality used to alleviate specific "knots" and areas of tension. Involves trigger point relief, deep work with thumbs, cross fiber friction, and other techniques to address highly specific pain areas or pain patterns.

 

Detoxification

Toxins are everywhere, including our food and our environment, and persist because of our insufficient metabolic ability to rid the body of all that we are exposed to on a daily basis; detoxification is the process of clearing toxins from our bodies or our environment.

 

Dry brushing

Stimulates blood and lymph flow as well as exfoliates the skin. Often used as protocol in wraps.

 

Essential Oils

The essence of plants; the fragrant, volatile extracts obtained from flowers, grasses, seeds, leaves, roots, barks, fruits, mosses, and resins. These pure substances are concentrated and healing.

 

Exfoliation

Via the use of either a dry brush, gloves, or esthetician instruments, the removal of dead or dry skin to cleanse, renew, and refresh skin.

 

Microdermabrasion

A skin treatment modality that gently abrades the skin surface, stimulating collagen growth and reducing fine liens, wrinkles and hyper-pigmentation (sun damage).

 

Pressure points

Specific locations within the muscle tissue that a massage therapist works on to relieve spasms, adhesions, and tension.

 

Reflexology

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) technique using massage of the feet to relieve and relax your entire body. Using the meridians and points of TCM, the reflexologist can address pain and problems through the map of the feet.

 

Remineralizing

Through the use of various products (for instance, mud, clay or seaweed), your body can receive needed minerals through the skin. The process of remineralizing then is a way to "feed" your body these nutrients through various hydrotherapies and wraps.

 

Shirodhara

An Aryurvedic treatment, literally meaning "thin stream of oil on the head". A meditation experience used to calm the chatter in the mind by streaming a thin line of warmed oil on the "third eye" of the forehead. Can be added to other spa treaments or as part of other Aryuvedic treatments.

 

SPA (sanitas per aqua - Latin)

Latin phrase, meaning "health through water" and the basis of the anacronym for what we know today as "spa".

 

Vichy Shower

A highly specialized spa hydrotherapy treatment used in a variety of body wraps and services. The vichy is a six-headed shower arched over a specially designed massage table. The effect of the vichy shower, plus the wrap products and process, provide increased circulation, detoxification, relaxation, and enhanced tone of the skin. A traditional and defining spa experience.

 

Wrap

A body treatment involving wrapping the body, or part of the body, with mylar, sheets, or blankets. The product use depends on the desired results and products range from mud to seaweed to clay. Aloe, herbs, essential oils and other skin enhancing or relaxing products are used.
